- What is a Domain Name? |
|
|
|
Answer
- A domain name is everything after the "http://www."
part of a website address. For example the address to the
home page of our website is http://www.1st4webbdesign.com,
the domain name for our site therefor is 1st4webbdesign.com. |

|
|
|
Domain
names cannot be bought, they can only be registered. You register
the domain name to your company or yourself for a period of
time, when that time period is up (usually 2 years or more)
you are given first refusal on the name, ie if you want it
for another two years you simply pay for two more years of
registration. |

|
|
|
The domain name you
choose is important because it will affect how easy it is for
your visitors to remember the address of your site. You should
try for something reasonably short that is easy to remember.
Adomain name of www.lepxkyn.com isn't good because it can't
be 'said' to someone, it must be spelt out, and it can't easily
be remembered. Try to avoid using an acronym of your company
name as these too often tend to be hard to remember if you cannot
remember what the acronym stands for. |

of the WhoIs search engine, search the WhoIs database to see
if the domain name you want is already taken. Take a look out

To have a domain name
is not enough however, it must be hosted
on a computer that serves the pages of your website to the people
that have requested them (by the action of clicking on a link
or typeing in the address of the site). |

- What is a DNS Server? |
|
|
|
Answer
- D.N.S. stands for Domain Name Server. A domain name server
allows us humans to use the internet. Every computer on the
interenet has an IP address (Internet Protocol address), this
is a string of numbers seperated by fullstops, ie 212.58.224.131
(this is the IP sddress of the bbc.co.uk
web site). Humans find remembering large amounts of IP addresses
to be rather anoying, so we use Domain
Names as an easy to remember alternative.
DNS Servers are the link between our use
of Domain Names and the computers use of IP addresses. The
DNS Servers translate www.bbc.co.uk into
212.58.224.13. They are crucial to the functioning
of the internet as they tell your web browser (usually Internet
Explorer) which computer your website is hosted
on. |

What is Hosting? |

Answer -
Hosting, is the storing of your website on a computer (server)
with a permanent, fast connection to the internet. These computers
are located in temperature controlled rooms and equiped with
emergency battery backup utilities. The computers are effectivly
connected directly to the interenet (unlike your broadband connection,
which goes through several routing stations and your ISP's computers),
giving them super fast connection speeds, allowing lots of visitors
to view your site without any delay in loading pages. |
